It’s that time of year where we reflect on what has passed and set new personal and professional goals. While many of you may commit to the goals that you set, numerous others will let them go without being fulfilled. Make 2014 a different type of year! Let’s build on the connection between goal setting and happiness.
According to an article by Timothy Pychyl in Psychology Today, “…the successful pursuit of meaningful goals plays an important role in the development and maintenance of our psychological well-being. To the extent that we’re making progress on our goals, we’re happier emotionally and more satisfied with our lives.”
Pursuing a goal has six benefits says Sonja Lyubomirsky, author of The How of Happiness. These are: increased sense of purpose and control, greater self-esteem and confidence, greater structure and meaning, better planning and prioritizing skills, increased ability to cope with problems as they arise, and opportunities to interact with others in meaningful ways.
But, it takes more than setting a goal to actually achieve it. In order to accomplish your goals, Pychyl and Lyubomirsky suggest taking the following steps:
- Just get started.
- Divide the overall goal into bite-sized sub-goals.
- Build a support network of family members and friends.
- Evaluate your progress and the importance of achieving the goal on a regular basis.
- Celebrate your success!
